Adventure: Mugdock County Park
Hedge riding for a traveling soldier's heart
Call me a pagan, hippie or tree hugger if ye will, but yesterday as I watched Episode 4- A Soldier’s Heart from the new STARZ series Blood Of My Blood I screamed out loud “OMG …it’s my tree”! In October 2023, I attended a Samhain Retreat hosted by the owners of Blackmoon Botanica. Our group enjoyed a weekend variety of holistic traditions, herbal workshops and we spent a day hiking/exploring the area around Milngavie (pronounced Mull-guy).

At the time I was unfamiliar with the landscape surrounding the outskirts of the bustling city of Glasgow. We ventured off to a very popular outdoor spot to enjoy the autumn oak trees as they changed colors. Mugdock County Park is also close to the beginning of the West Highland Way.

Located in East Dunbartonshire, Mugdock County Park also is the site of two historic castles (one with a wee bit of Fraser history). The trails and surrounding landscape offer over 270 hectares of moorland, woodlands, and even a visitor center with shops. Plenty of space for parking. The day we visited there were various folks out for a walk. A good time for all ages. *Travel Tip* the visitor center had the most delicious hot chocolate and coffee.
As you head out deeper back along the trails (past Mugdock Castle) you arrive at the older section of the trails. Tall pine trees line the road, and you will discover what I now call the Scottish version of El Tenedor del Diablo tree. Whether you have been drawn to Scotland because of Outlander or you simply enjoy jet setting to various film sites, Mugdock Park should be on your list. Do take the time to run away from the hustle and bustle of the city life of Glasgow. These trails offer” more to it than meets the eye.”
